Jaguar Land Rover is developing new technology which will enable the new Range Rover models to detect potholes they encounter in the road and share the data in real time with authorities and other vehicles.
The British car manufacturer has introduced sensors for its Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport models that map the surface under a vehicle’s wheels and by monitoring changes in the suspension settings, they gather data about road conditions, then tag it with GPS system. The data will be sent in real time via a server to other vehicles, as well as to the local council and road authorities and will help them to prioritize road repairs. The company will also be looking for ways to scan the road ahead of vehicles using forward facing experimental cameras. Jaguar Land Rover’s digital camera will take an image of the potholes and send it to the road authorities.
After receiving a warning from another car about potholes or broken manholes ahead, a vehicle could adjust suspension height to smooth the ride, as well as the driver would be able to slow down in order to avoid the danger.
In other words, the new technology could help reduce the potential punctures and vehicle damages; also the road accidents and it will assist authorities in maintaining the road network.
