Apple is rumored to be developing a new massive head-up display system that will span nearly the entire car windscreen. The display screen will be between 25 and 50-inch wide and is very likely to enter production, according to Trip Chowdhry, a tech analyst at Global Equities Research. The curved-glass screen will not only be extremely huge, it will include a set of sensors wired to the windshield and may be completely gesture-controlled. The technology is most famously used by jet pilots and could project vivid icons and information for drivers while on the road.
The analyst Trip Chowdhry said a week ago that the secret project could be Apple’s ‘next generation’ device, after gadgets such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
The tech giant Apple declined to give any further information. It is obvious that if Apple does develop this head-up display system, it could also be adopted by other devices such as TVs.
Apple is reportedly to be working on its own self driving vehicle, which will be the most likely place for this system to appear. It’s possible that Apple would become a supplier to other automakers, though.
You may think that having alarge display in front of you would be especially useful if the car is driving itself as head-up displays are designed to keep your eyes on the road to minimize distraction. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started a research on the head-up technology’s effect on distraction last year and their results have yet to be released. In 2004, NASA said even trained pilots could lose focus because of head-up display’s vivid colors and multi-information, a problem they called ‘attention capture.’
