Apple has confirmed for the first time that it is working on technology to develop self-driving cars. The Cupertino-based tech giant has been rumored to be interested in the self-driving car market for the past two years and it has not publicly addressed its plans until now.
The company submitted a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stating that Apple has been excited about the potential of automated technology in transportation and many other areas.
No further details on the project were offered, but Apple says that it is investing “heavily” in the study of “machine learning and automation”. The letter highlights the “significant social benefits” of self-driving cars. The technology is described as “life-saving” and able to prevent thousands of fatalities and millions of car crashes in the near future.
Apple has never officially acknowledged that it is working on autonomous technology or a self-driving car.
