A giant quadcopter big enough to carry a passenger will be flying people around Dubai in July. The announcement was made by Mattar al-Tayer, the head of Dubai’s Roads & Transportation Agency at the World Government Summit last week.
This human-size drone, dubbed EHang 184, is an all-electric vehicle that has four arms and uses a total of eight propellers at the end that allows it to travel up to 60mph.
The 184 is made in China and its manufacturer is a drone company Ehang. The 184 was unveiled at CES in Las Vegas last year after 100 successful manned test flights. The 184 is fully autonomous and can carry a single passenger through the air and all the rider has to do is enter their final destination into a smartphone app. The passenger weight needs to be less than 220 pounds. The drone will be able to fly over short distances at 62 miles per hour with a fully-charged battery. The EHang 184 will be controlled through 4G mobile Internet. There will be a command center that will employ people to monitor every 184 in the air 24/7 and make sure everything is safe.
The 184 has Vertical Take off and Lands (VTOL) capability and it doesn’t need any elaborate runways. EHang claims that the drone is ideal for traveling short-to-medium distances and will help reducing traffic congestion and accidents associated with any human-operated vehicle, and improving air quality in the urban area.
