The British luxury car maker is developing a new model and the news was confirmed by the chairman of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Peter Schwarzenbauer and the chief executive of the company Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes in an open letter just a few days ago.
Twelve years later, after the introduction of its successful models like Ghost and Wraith, the 111-year-old auto maker stands proudly at the top of British luxury car manufacturing and its decision to enter the SUV market isn’t much of a surprise. Luxury automakers like Mercedes, Porsche and Land Rover have seen an increase in sales for their SUVs. Although slightly behind its rivals, Rolls Royce relies on its brand name to help overcome that gap: the company will finally launch a model to compete against Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, and the upcoming Bentley Bentayga. In this way, Ferrari is left as the only major luxury carmaker without an SUV in its lineup.
The new Roller will be an ultra-luxury SUV-like model and they are calling it “everywhere vehicle”. The company says their new Rolls would offer “the luxury of a Rolls Royce in a vehicle that can cross any terrain”. The new “high-bodied” Rolls Royce will be built on an all-new aluminum architecture that is unique to Rolls Royce. The British car maker says they are planning to take their time “to develop and perfect this new concept in luxury”. The new still unnamed model will sport the same V-12 twin-turbo 6.6-liter found in its stablemates the Ghost and Wraith. The iconic vertical grille, that makes a Roller unmistakable from meters away, will remain unchanged. In addition, the newest family member will also feature an advanced all-wheel drive system.
Unfortunately, Rolls Royce didn’t provide any further information about price or availability and it is not yet known whether the new model will be shown at any auto show this year, including Geneva and New York. It is likely to see it sometime in 2018 as a 2019 model.
