Watch How AI Creates a 3D Model of a Person

Watch artificial intelligence create a 3D model of a person for just a few seconds.

A minute-and-a-half long video shows how artificial intelligence is able to transform the image of a human body into a 3D character after they turn around themselves. The system requires special camera equipment to detect depth or to view someone from multiple angles. A new algorithm creates 3D models using standard video footage from one angle.

Alibaba And Ford Opened China’s First Car Vending Machine

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group and US carmaker Ford open a car vending machine in China’s southern city of Guangzhou.
The five-story building offers up to 42 cars of various models, including the Ford Explorer SUV and the Mustang. The potential buyers are able to see, test drive and purchase the vehicles via Alibaba’s online shopping platform T-Mall.

It will be the first car vending machine in China and will be open to the public from April 23. All customers will be given a three-day test drive before they commit to any purchase.

After months of planning, Alibaba in partnership with Ford opened the country’s first car vending machine in the city of Guangzhou. The company is already planning a second vending machine to be opened in Beijing, and a third one in Hangzhou. Continue reading

The New Subaru Will Warn if You Are Sleepy or Distracted

The new Subaru Forester will use facial recognition technology to detect driver’s fatigue.

Subaru announced at the New York International Auto Show that it will equip the next generation Forester with an interesting safety feature that is totally new to the automaker’s lineup and uses facial recognition.

The Japanese company has become the first car maker to install facial recognition inside a vehicle for the purpose of detecting driver’s fatigue or distraction.

Tesla Voluntarily Recalls a Huge Number of its Model S Sedans

Tesla said Thursday it was recalling a huge number of its Model S sedans around the world over faulty steering component. The automaker informed customers in an email that it was a proactive move and none of the Tesla’s other vehicles were affected.

Carvana’s Newest Car Vending Machine in Tampa

A new eight-story vending machine will sell used cars in Tampa. This is Carvana’s second car vending machine in Florida, as another one has recently opened in Jacksonville, but the Tampa location is one of the largest holding up to 32 vehicles at a time.
The fully automated, coin-operated vending machine is the eighth of its kind across the country – joining the one in Jacksonville and those in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Nashville, and Raleigh.
Florida has known about the new way to sell used cars since last year, when Carvana launched for the first time in the area, the Jacksonville vending machine, offering free, as-soon-as-next-day car delivery. Instead of spending hours walking through dealership lots and dealing with a salesperson, customers can order a used car through the company’s website and schedule a pickup time. Uber CEO Halts Autonomous-Car Testing After Fatal Crash in Arizona

An Uber self-driving car struck and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday night.

This is the first known pedestrian death involving a self-driving vehicle.

Uber Technologies Inc. halted self-driving cars tests after one of its vehicle hit and killed a woman in Tempe and this is likely the first pedestrian fatality involving the technology.

Elaine Herzberg, 49-year-old, was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk when a Uber vehicle in autonomous mode struck her, according to the Tempe Police Department, which responded to the scene at around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

According to Tempe Police Department, there was a vehicle operator in the car but no passengers at the time of the accident. The woman was transferred to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.

Officials from Uber said on Monday that Programs in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Phoenix and Toronto will be paused. A spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the accident.

Uber said in a statement that the company is fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident.

The incident may raise questions about the safety of the autonomous driving technology.
