Driver Dies in Crash While Using Tesla’s Autopilot

772px-Tesla_Motors_Model_S-1_close-upThe first known self-driving car fatality was disclosed on Thursday evening. The tragic fatal accident involving a Tesla Model S on autopilot and a tractor trailer occurred on May 7 in Willingston, Florida.

Joshua Brown, 40, a former Navy SEAL of Ohio is the first person to die while using the self-driving autopilot system. The driver put his Model S into autopilot mode. The system is able to control the vehicle’s trajectory during highway driving. The accident happened when a track trailor made a left turn in front of the Tesla, the car driver failed to hit the brakes and the two vehicles collided. Rolls-Royce Unveils Its First Driverless Car Concept

450px-The-spirit-of-Ecstasy--Flying-LadyRolls-Royce Motor Cars unveiled its vision of “the future of luxury mobility” at a concept car event at the Roundhouse arts venue in north London a few days ago. The concept car is called Vision Next 100 and is the brainchild of Giles Taylor, director of design at Rolls-Royce.

The concept vehicle would be powered by ‘a zero emissions powertrain’ and measures just over 19-feet long, according to a press release. The luxurious car comes with a canopy roof, covered wheels and a door on only one side.

Google Veterans Plan to Put Autonomous Big Rigs on US Highways

Ottomotto is a startup, based in San Francisco, is founded by four ex-Google engineers, including long-time self-driving pioneer Anthony Levandowski, one of the founders of Google’s self-driving car program.  Levandowski left Google toward the end of January to pursue his vision at Otto. The new Silicon Valley startup was co-founded by Lior Ron and Don Burnette, both of them former Google employees. Lior Ron is a former Alphabet employee who earlier led Google Maps as well as the development of Google’s Moto X smartphone. The fourth co-founder is Claire Delaunay, another robotics expert. Otto was created in January and since then the company has expanded to 41 employees experienced in self-driving teachnology. Continue reading

Nissan Becomes the Controlling Shareholder in Mitsubishi Motors

Mitsubishi_Pajero_Mini_251Nissan is buying $2.2 billion controlling stake in Mitsubishi Motors and becomes the single largest shareholder in its smaller, scandal-hit rival. Nissan has agreed to buy a 34 percent stake in Mitsubishi Motors Corp as the second seeks outside capital to survive the scandal over manipulated fuel economy data.

Last month, Mitsubishi, Japan’s sixth-largest car maker, admitted it had been exaggerating the numbers on its fuel economy data in order to make cars seem more efficient than they were in reality. Continue reading

Tesla Suddenly Has A Huge New Rival

The announcement was made at a press conference in Beijing last Wednesday when China’s Le Holdings Co Ltd, also known as LeEco, addressed its recent name change and new range of products. Singapore is Getting the World’s First Driverless Taxi Service
