Tesla is getting closer to having its own A.I. chip to handle autonomous driving tasks in its cars.
The EV- maker is working with AMD to develop its own A.I. chip for autonomous cars, according to a source familiar with the matter.
It isn’t a secret that Tesla always wanted to build an in-house artificial intelligence chip to handle autonomous functions of its cars. The electric carmaker is closer than ever to reaching that goal with help from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Tesla is reportedly developing such a chip on top of technology from AMD and is even working with Global Foundries, an AMD spin-off and chip fabricator.
Tesla has hired more than 50 people to work on the project under the leadership of longtime chip architect Jim Keller, who previously worked with AMD and Apple. Among them, there are several AMD veterans including Bill McGee principal hardware engineer, director Ganesh Venkataramanan, and Dan Bailey as a system circuit design lead.
AMD share price spiked after it was announced that the company is working with the electric carmaker. The same day the shares of the stock got nearly 5 percent higher and continued to climb for hours.
A more power-efficient A.I. chip could help Tesla get closer to delivering totally autonomous vehicles. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised that capability will be available to customers by 2019.
